In some ways it is a disservice to overlook the fall for fence work; in this part of the state there is no better time to do it. We think every homeowner ought to be aware of that fact before the leaves are done falling.

Why Fall Is a Smart Time to Build a Fence

With the summer’s heat behind us and the ground still unfrozen, the job is more comfortable for all concerned and proceeds without a hitch.

There are any number of reasons an installation will go off without a problem in East Tennessee in the fall:

  • July heat can make digging and post setting a chore, but the cooler air of fall does not
  • You will find the ground to be workable, neither frozen nor waterlogged from the spring
  • The deep cold has yet to arrive so posts and concrete have their time to set
  • A contractor’s calendar tends to open up once the summer rush is over
  • No need to wait, your yard is in order for spring

Then again, with the growing season waning one is not contending with the kind of heavy brush and tall grass you would in midsummer.

Watch Your Weather Windows

Weather in East Tennessee in the fall has its way of changing on you; a warm dry week gives way to rain and a sudden chill. So timing is of the essence.

You want to have your concrete cured and posts in place prior to a hard freeze as the cold will interfere with the curing process. Some forethought is warranted. Our hours are 8am to 8pm, seven days a week, so you have the flexibility to accommodate the weather and your own schedule. If the weekend presents a dry spell we will be there.

Clear the Way Before You Build

Debris and leaves are a fact of life in the fall and they can obscure what is along your fence line. Make a circuit of the proposed site ahead of the installation day.

Things to be on the lookout for:

  • Uneven ground or stumps under a leaf pile
  • Fallen branches in the way
  • Debris concealing property line markers
  • Drainage spots prone to wetness after a rain
  • Any old fencing to be taken down

We will see to the demolition if an existing fence is in the way; it is best to get the old out of the way to keep the project on track.

Choosing a Material for the Season

Whatever material is chosen has to stand up to an East Tennessee winter and more. We put in a range of options, each with its own merits:

  • Wood for something of a natural, classic appearance
  • Vinyl when you want the color to last and maintenance to be minimal
  • Aluminum for a finish that is both durable and clean
  • Chain-link as a sensible option on a budget

If you are in doubt as to what suits your property, we will help you sort it out. The owner has in excess of seven years in the fence business and four in construction, so our recommendations are informed by experience.

Plan Now, Enjoy It in Spring

The appeal of a fall build is the timing. Once the weather breaks you have a new fence in place. There is no jostling for a spot on the schedule in the spring when everyone is of the same mind.
