How to Choose the Best Wood for a Durable, Beautiful Fence

wood fence installation

Different kinds of wood can be breathtakingly beautiful when they’re prepared, but not all of them are good for fences. When you install a wooden fence, there are a number of things you need to take into consideration that don’t apply to indoor wood furniture or wood flooring.

  • The weather: Your wooden fence is going to be out in the elements 365 days a year. The summers are hot and humid, but the winters, though short, are wet and can be freezing cold. This means that the wood has to be able to resist the rot and mold that come with humid weather. The fence also needs to withstand winter snow and ice.
  • Pests: Wood that’s good for fencing repels pests naturally. Other types of wood need to be treated frequently and may not be the best fence material.
  • Cost: As with everything else to do with your home and property, you should get the best quality material that you can afford. If there are types of fence wood that are just too pricey, there are less expensive options that are almost as good.

Some Woods to Choose From

There’s a good selection of woods to choose from when it comes to fencing. Here’s a sample of them.

Cedar Wood

As an evergreen, cedar is considered a softwood, but it’s unrivaled when it comes to resisting pests, mildew, mold and all kinds of weather. At first, it’s a beautiful mahogany red, and over time it weathers to an attractive silvery gray. Two popular types of cedar are western red and northern white. The one drawback with cedar is that it’s expensive.

Redwood

Redwood is chosen for its durability and its beauty. Like cedar, it also resists insects and rot. It’s still pricey, but it’s not as pricey as cedar. Its beautiful reddish-brown color is a plus, though you’ll have to stain or seal it to keep it from turning silvery gray.

Pressure-Treated Pine

If you’re on a tight budget when it comes to wood fencing, pressure-treated pine might be just the thing. Pressure treating impregnates the wood with preservatives that make it withstand the weather and other problems that confront wooden fences. It might not be as aesthetically pleasing as redwood and cedar, but you can paint or stain it to complement your house.
